Post Interview Thank You Letters

Is it really necessary to send a post-interview thank you letter?

Yes, it is.

You do want to convert that great first impression created by your résumé and cover letter into a job, don't you?

Well then! Take a few moments after every interview to send a thank you to the interviewer. You'll never go wrong by doing so.

A post-interview thank you gives you another opportunity to illustrate why you are the best candidate for the position. Point out a specific topic discussed during your interview, and clarify how your skills will enable you to do the job.

Send your letter within 48 hours of your interview. Include contact information and when you are available to start. Perhaps mention that you’ll follow up with a phone call or email within the week. Even if you don’t get the job, keeping your name prominent might lead to a referral or a future position.

Post Interview Thank You

Notes

Dear Ms. Willoughby:

Thank you for spending extra time with me this morning; I know I had a lot of questions for you about the Sales Associate Position at Tile Design. Although my background isn’t in retail sales, my experience as an inside customer service representative should transfer to the sales floor. After all, both sales and service are about defining a need and then offering a solution.

I’m excited to work face-to-face with customers as they plan a remodel. As I mentioned, the design classes I took in college should give me an edge when offering ideas.

Thanks for considering me for this position. I am able to start training next week. If you have any further questions, please call my cell at 555-8234. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Gobel:

I appreciate being able to speak to you about the assistant lab technician position at Devy University. As a graduate student majoring in biochemistry, I have the experience necessary to fulfill all requirements.

Your research in particular is very interesting to me. I know I have a lot to learn just by assisting you.

My summer term ends next week, so I will be available anytime after that. Please email me or call if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you again for your consideration.

Sincerely,
